Background

During the four weeks that elapsed between the Monaco Grand Prix and the Canadian Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Belgium was supposed to be held at the Circuit de Spa -Francorchamps. The teams and drivers were also all present and took the training on. Michele Alboreto qualified for the pole position. During the second training day, however, it turned out that the renewed prior to the event track surface burst open in places. Since this represented a massive security risk, it was decided for the first time in the history of Formula 1 action in a race weekend after the start of the official qualifying sessions. The race was postponed to a later date in the season and the teams departed.

The Zakspeed team decided in favor of further development work on the vehicle and the engine not to participate in the two overseas races in Canada and the United States.

François Hesnault had suffered in the context of testing at the Circuit Paul Ricard in southern France a serious accident in which he was briefly trapped by drift fences that had wrapped around his vehicle, in the cockpit. Given these impressions, he decided to end his Formula 1 career. He was replaced by Marc Surer Brabham team.

Training

The two Lotus drivers formed the first row of the grid, where Elio de Angelis took pole position ahead of Ayrton Senna. This was followed by the two Ferrari of Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson, Alain Prost and Derek Warwick.

Race

By the sixth round, the two Lotus 97T formed a double top. Then, however, Senna had to drive due to damage to the turbocharger the box. Alboreto benefited from by ingesting the second place and caught up to the leader de Angelis, where he could finally pass in the 16th round by a remarkable maneuver on the outside rail of a curve.

In the 50th round also succeeded Alboreto teammates Johansson, de Angelis to overtake. He thus secured the Ferrari team's first double victory since the Grand Prix of the Netherlands in 1983. Third place went at the end of Alain Prost ahead of Keke Rosberg, Elio de Angelis and Nigel Mansell.
