Background

The entry list for the sixth World Cup race of the year corresponded exactly to that of the previous weekend discharged Grand Prix of Canada.

Although there is only one race in the U.S. was in this season and the designation United States Grand Prix would therefore have been clear, the race was still run as a United States Grand Prix East, as it was as held last year in Detroit. The official name was Detroit Grand Prix.

Training

Ayrton Senna took the fourth time this season the pole position. Nigel Mansell qualified for the second place ahead of Michele Alboreto and Alain Prost. Keke Rosberg and Derek Warwick formed the third row.

Since it was raining during the second qualifying session on Saturday, most of the pilots dropped the completion of a timed lap.

Race

While Senna realized his pole position into a guide, Rosberg overtook during the first round both Prost and Alboreto and Mansell. As Senna in the eighth round due to tire problems slowed the Finn took the lead, which he defended from now until the finish. Mansell added Rosberg's lead initially to a Williams double peak, but turned on lap 20 and had to Elio de Angelis happen. Shortly thereafter he was also overtaken by Stefan Johansson and retired two laps later. Martin Brundle came by briefly to fourth place before he was ousted in round 27 of Alboreto of this position.

Due to the failure of de Angelis in the 28th round of the Ferrari drivers Johansson and Alboreto finished second and third behind Rosberg. Changed to that order from now until the finish nothing more, although Senna caught up quickly after a pit stop. He resigned, however, in round 52 due to an error while trying to overtake Alboreto from. Thus occupied at the end of Stefan Bellof in fourth place ahead of Elio de Angelis and Nelson Piquet.
