Background

As Niki Lauda still failed due to an injury as a result of his training accident as part of the Belgian Grand Prix, John Watson took over the cockpit and thus came about two years after his last mission at the Grand Prix of South Africa in 1983 for a brief Formula 1 comeback.

In Tyrrell Italian debutant Ivan Capelli was hired as a replacement for the fatally injured Stefan Bellof. Thus, the team extended its commitment again on two vehicles, while RAM Racing contested the rest of the season with only one car.

Training

For the sixth time this season, Ayrton Senna secured the pole position in the Lotus 97T. Brabham driver Nelson Piquet qualified for the second place ahead of the two Williams team-mate Nigel Mansell and Keke Rosberg. The third series was formed by Philippe Streiff and the leading in the world championship standings by a considerable margin Alain Prost. Since its only remaining rival for the title, Michele Alboreto, qualified only for 15th place, the chances of Prost were good to secure this weekend ahead of his first world championship.

Race

After just a few meters were Prost's chances of premature winning the world title, which had arisen from the grid, initially much worse because he had to dodge the started having problems Rosberg, it fell on the grass next to the track and on the 14. rank fell back, while his opponent Alboreto was in ninth after a good start. Senna led the race after the first round of Rosberg, Piquet and Mansell.

In the seventh round, Rosberg turned while trying to overtake Senna in the Surtees curve. Piquet then collided with the Williams FW10 and retired, while Rosberg, who had just suffered a puncture, the race after a pit stop continued. He left the pit lane a few meters in front of the oncoming Senna, who thus initially not outsell him. Then Rosberg blocked the Lotus pilots deliberately in order to give his teammate Mansell, followed in second place behind Senna an advantage. In the ninth round he could actually overtake the Brazilian.

In the twelfth round Alboreto retired due to damage to the turbocharger, which Prost, who had fought in the meantime back up to sixth place forward, fifth place was enough to stand firm as a world champion. Although he was ousted in seventh place during the following rounds by Jacques Laffite and Stefan Johansson, but finished fourth and won the title.

Mansell won his first Grand Prix in front of Senna and Rosberg. Previously, Marc Surer had some rounds located on the second place, before he was knocked out in round 63 due to a turbocharger damage.
