1985 UEFA European Under-16 Championship
The third U-16 Football Championship was held in the period from 17 to 26 May 1985 in Hungary. The winner was the Soviet Union with a 4-0 victory over Greece. The GDR was fourth, while the Federal Republic was eliminated after the first round. For the first time the tournament was held with 16 teams.

Qualification
The qualifying time was attended by only 23 nations, they were distributed to a total of 10 groups, partly geographical aspects have been taken into account. There were three groups of three participants, and 7 groups with only two participants. All ten group winners were qualified for the final round. Then there were the three second- placed triplets, as well as Norway and Bulgaria, whose opponent does not competed and of course the hosts Hungary, did not have to qualify for the finals for the first time.

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups played each team once against each other. The group winners reached the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reached the final, the semifinal losers play for third place.

1 win on penalties
The national team of the Soviet Union Soviet Union became the first European Championship in the U16/U17-Junioren. The Soviet Union was thus the first team that could get this item on foreign soil.
