1986–87 SM-liiga season
The SM- liiga season 1986/87 was the twelfth season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish Champion became the tenth time overall and for the sixth time since the introduction of the SM - liiga Tappara Tampere, while Jokerit Helsinki relegation to the second division.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 44 regular season games against each other. While the first four teams for the play- offs qualified, had to play for the league next to last against the teams on the second to fourth the second division. The Last automatically dismounted in the second division and was replaced by the second division champions. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
