Background
With an undiminished participants joined the Formula 1 one week after the Grand Prix debut in Hungary for the twelfth World Championship race of the year in Austria.
In Arrows and Minardi still existed only a copy of the new A8 car or M186. The respective teammates took turns.
Training
Surprisingly qualified with Teo Fabi and Gerhard Berger two drivers of the still relatively young but distinguished team Benetton - BMW for the first row. In addition to McLaren - Porsche driver Keke Rosberg qualified with Riccardo Patrese Brabham in a third equipped with a BMW engine driver for one of the top places. The reigning world champion Alain Prost finished fifth in front of his three rivals in the fight for the world title, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna.

Race

Behind Prost reached the two Ferrari drivers Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson as well as the driver of the Lola cars onset Team Haas, Alan Jones and Patrick Tambay, destination, and thus achieved the best result for their respective team in the season 1986.
