Background

In the week before the fifth world championship race test runs took place at the Circuit Paul Ricard in southern France. Elio de Angelis crashed hard in the course of which. His recovery lasted relatively long due to the ill-equipped security forces. Fellow drivers had to help. In addition, no rescue helicopter was on site, but had to first be requested. De Angelis later died at a hospital in Marseille his injuries, prompting discussions on much-needed improvements to the safety standards in the context of testing came up.

In Brabham de Angelis was not initially replaced. The team entered with only one car for Riccardo Patrese. Otherwise, there were no other changes in the field of participants compared to the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

Training

Besides Pole sitter Nelson Piquet, Gerhard Berger qualified, who took for the aspiring Benetton team, for the second starting position. The second row formed the defending champion Alain Prost, together with the Ayrton Senna leading at this point in the championship. Race

While Piquet was able to put his pole position into a guide, Senna and Prost concluded before the La Source hairpin on the Berger started badly. This collided with Prost, whereupon the subsequent pilots had to avoid abrupt. Except for Patrick Tambay, who damaged the suspension of his car, but all the drivers were able to continue the race without major damage. Behind Piquet and Nigel Mansell Senna followed before Stefan Johansson and Johnny Dumfries.

In the third round Mansell Senna came to pass on the second rank, but turned two laps later, so Senna and Johansson referred him to fourth place.

Due to damage to motor Piquet Senna came in round 17 at the top. In the course of subsequent short pit stops for tire changes briefly led Johansson and from lap 24 Mansell the race. Ayrton Senna was followed in second place ahead of the two Ferrari of Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson. Jacques Laffite crossed the finish line in fifth place ahead of Alain Prost, who had fought back within 32 laps to sixth place, after he had finished the first round due to the collision with Berger 23.
