Background
Jacques Laffite broke this weekend with his 176th Grand Prix participation the previous valid record that had been set up at the Brazilian Grand Prix 1975 by Graham Hill.
For the first time since his car accident in March team boss Frank Williams was able to follow a race directly on the route again.
Training
The two Williams drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell dominated the training and thus qualified for the two starting places in the front row in front of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger, and the two McLaren team mate Keke Rosberg and Alain Prost.
Race
At the start Mansell lost a few places due to a technical problem on his Williams FW11. Further back in the field to an accident that was caused by the fact that Thierry Boutsen Arrows A8 control of his lost, strayed to the left of the track and bounced back after contact with the barriers occurred. Mansell took a spare car part in it, and finished the first lap in third behind Piquet and Berger. In the third round, he overtook the Austrians and henceforth shortened the gap to his team-mate Piquet. Prost was after the failure of his team mate Rosberg in fifth place behind Senna.
In lap 23 Piquet made a mistake when switching what Mansell promptly took advantage to take the lead. He defended this position until the checkered flag and assumed a lead in the world championship. The lap of honor he could not attend to an end due to lack of fuel and has been associated with a vehicle track safety to the podium, where he had to be visibly exhausted almost collapsed and therefore supported.
Prost finished the race third behind Piquet. René Arnoux finished fourth ahead of the two Tyrrell - Martin Brundle pilots and Philippe Streiff.
