1986 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship

The Volleyball World Championship for Men 1986 was held from 25 September to 5 October in France. The USA won the title for the first time and made so by the long-standing dominance of the Eastern Europeans for the first success of a team from the West. The Games were held in Paris, Montpellier, Tourcoing, Clermont- Ferrand, Orléans, Toulouse, Nantes and Evreux.

Mode

The sixteen participants played in the first round in four groups of four. The top three teams from each group were in the second group, two groups of six, the remaining teams played in another group for the places from thirteen to sixteen. The results from the direct duels of the first round were taken on. After the second round, the top four teams determined the new world champion in the semifinals and final. The other teams also played in knockout tournaments from the ranks of five to twelve.

The new world champion would have qualified for the 1988 Olympics. Since the USA as the defending champion and the Soviet Union were the winner of the World Cup has already qualified, the World bronze medalist Bulgaria took over the place.

Qualification

Hosts France and the top seven teams in the last World Cup qualified automatically. Five other starting places there were for the top ranked teams in the last continental tournaments. In this way, Czechoslovakia (European Championship 1985), reached Taiwan (Asia), Egypt (Africa ), the USA ( NORCECA ) and Venezuela ( South America) the final round.

The last three participants were determined at a B tournament from April 3 to 12 in Piraeus. There were playing eleven teams first in a six- and a group of five, and then in placing matches for participation in the World Cup tournament in France.
