Until the 18th round, both McLaren drivers came to pass Arnoux, who were second and third respectively. As Mansell had to change his tires in the pits, Prost took the lead, but regained the British in the 37th round, where he exploited the advantages of the new tires. He eventually won ahead of Prost and Piquet. Rosberg was fourth ahead of the two Ligier drivers René Arnoux and Jacques Laffite.
