The Hungarian Grand Prix 1986 was held on 10 August at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród near Budapest instead and was the eleventh round of the Formula 1 season 1986.

Background

For the first time found a Formula 1 race held in one of the so-called Eastern Bloc countries. An estimated 380,000 spectators attended the race track during the weekend. But the race was watched by 200,000 viewers.

Inside the Arrows teams exchanged the two regular drivers their cars, so Christian Danner took with the new A9 and Thierry Boutsen began the A8. For the first time a copy of the new Minardi M186 was launched at the start. Andrea de Cesaris drove the car.

Training

For the sixth time in the season 1986, Ayrton Senna qualified for the pole position. Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell followed right behind it, so that the leading in the championship pilots entered the race from the first four grid positions from.

Race

Senna defended its leading position at the start. Mansell overtook Prost and Piquet, the latter successfully countered before the end of the first round. Among the first six were located during the first six rounds with Patrick Tambay and Alan Jones both Lola drivers.

In the twelfth round Piquet took the lead. Senna Prost and Mansell followed before. Keke Rosberg was sixth in front of Johnny Dumfries.

On lap 16 Prost drove because of an electrical problem to the box. As his teammate Rosberg to make change his tire almost simultaneously in the pits drove, lost the Finn time and thus his fifth position. He came in ninth and Prost was the last back on the track. In lap 23, the Frenchman dropped out.

Through a pit stop Piquet lost the lead to Senna. This gained an adequate projection, so that he could a few rounds later defend the lead after his first pit stop. However, Piquet was close behind him and overtook him to dueled the two Brazilians to victory, with Piquet kept his nose in front in round 57 then on. Nigel Mansell reached the finish line third ahead of Stefan Johansson, Johnny Dumfries and Martin Brundle.

Due to the time already valid rule that a Grand Prix may take up to two hours, the race was stopped one lap before the scheduled end.

In the championship, the four favorites Mansell, Senna, Piquet and Prost were after the race separated by only eleven points.
