Background

A new team called the Jolly Club stepped up to the first time. The of a Motori Moderni turbo engine driven AGS JH21C was driven by Ivan Capelli.

The Italian debutant Alex Caffi represented in the Canadian Osella Allen Berg. Thus, eight Italians at their home race.

Training

As three weeks before in Austria Benetton driver Teo Fabi secured the pole position. Alain Prost followed before Nigel Mansell and Fabis teammate Gerhard Berger. Race
