Background
A new team called the Jolly Club stepped up to the first time. The of a Motori Moderni turbo engine driven AGS JH21C was driven by Ivan Capelli.
The Italian debutant Alex Caffi represented in the Canadian Osella Allen Berg. Thus, eight Italians at their home race.
Training
As three weeks before in Austria Benetton driver Teo Fabi secured the pole position. Alain Prost followed before Nigel Mansell and Fabis teammate Gerhard Berger. The third row were the two Brazilian Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet, who still had a realistic chance of winning the World Cup alongside Mansell and Prost.
Race
