Background

The street circuit of Monaco had been modified before the race with a new chicane in the harbor area, which extended the range to 14 feet and made for slightly slower speeds in this section.

Patrick Tambay took from now on also with a Lola Ford -Cosworth THL2 with turbo engine to which had previously been used two weeks at the Grand Prix of San Marino by his teammate Alan Jones. In Tyrrell both drivers went for the first time with the new type 015 at the start.

Training

Ayrton Senna qualified first time this season not for the pole position, but for the third place behind Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell. There was Michele Alboreto and Riccardo Patrese, Gerhard Berger before.

Since only 20 vehicles were registered to race on the narrow course, missed six pilot qualification, including Johnny Dumfries a Lotus driver.

Race

Due to a short-term change in a T- Car had the qualified go into the race Jacques Laffite by the end of the field actually in the sixth on the grid.

Prost finished the first lap as the leader before Senna, Mansell, Alboreto and the started from ninth place from Keke Rosberg. During the first 15 rounds it came between these pilots to any position changes. But then Rosberg overtook first Alboreto and pulled ten laps later passed Mansell.

After Prost and Senna had completed their scheduled pit stops, led cheers before his team-mate Rosberg, who completed the race without intermediate tire change. Senna followed before Mansell. Aided by the technically -related losses of Michele Alboreto and Gerhard Berger came René Arnoux and Nelson Piquet in the fifth and sixth. In the 51st round Laffite occupied the sixth place. The order at the top remained unchanged thereafter until the finish.

On lap 68, Martin Brundle and Patrick Tambay collided in the Mirabeau curve. Both drivers dropped out.
