Background

For the first time since 1981 was again a round of the Formula 1 World Championship held in Spain. As host of the then newly built Circuito Permanente de Jerez was elected to the south of the country.

It came at exactly the same drivers and teams who had completed three weeks before the season opener in Brazil.

Training

From the training results, the same first three grid positions as in Brazil, namely Ayrton Senna resulted in pole position ahead of the two Williams drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell. This was followed by the two McLaren teammate Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg before René Arnoux sixth.

Race

While Senna and Piquet were able to defend their positions at first, Mansell was already made during the first round behind Rosberg and a short time later behind Prost. Between the 18th and the 39th round, however, he managed to overtake one by one all opponents in front of him and take over the top.

Ten laps before the end of the race Senna captured the lead back. Mansell had significantly during the maneuver off the throttle to avoid a collision and not to go off. This also came Prost, of which the two duelists around the guide had clearly never can settle on Mansell into second place. Mansell then came to the pits to get new tires. With about 20 seconds behind, he returned to the track. Within a few laps he closed them again on the leading duo. In the fourth last lap he overtook Prost. On the last lap he overtook Senna and was, in some parts of track right next to him on the same level, as well as on the home straight. Senna crossed it by a margin of only 0.014 seconds, making the race result became known as one of the scarcest in Formula 1 history.

Alain Prost took third place ahead of Keke Rosberg, Teo Fabi and Gerhard Berger.
