1987–88 AHL season
The 1987/88 season was the 52nd regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, 14 teams played 80 matches each. The four best teams in the North Division and the South Division then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Utica Devils were added as an expansion team in the league
- The Moncton Golden Flames were sold and played from now on under the name Moncton Hawks

Calder Cup Playoffs
Mode
For the playoffs, the four teams from each division qualified. In the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. All play-off rounds, and the final was played in best- of-seven mode.
