Background

A fortnight ago, unchanged compared to the U.S. Grand Prix participants competed in Le Castellet for the sixth World Cup race of the year.

Training

For the fourth year in a row, Nigel Mansell secured the pole position. Alain Prost qualified for the second place ahead of Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet. Thierry Boutsen and Gerhard Berger represented the third row.

Race

After the order at the top remained unchanged for the first few meters, succeeded Piquet on the back straight to overtake Prost and thus produce a Williams double guide. Senna followed in fourth place behind Prost and Benetton before the two of Thierry Boutsen and Teo Fabi.

In lap 19 Piquet lost second place to Prost. However, in the wake of the pit stops he got both Prost and Mansell to pass to the top.
