First in the season 1988 /89 German Bundesliga and thus German master of men was the FC Bayern Munich.

Season overview

Bayern Munich led since Matchday at the table, once broken by VfB Stuttgart after the 10th game day. The only serious competition during the season proved to be the 1st FC Cologne, who played his best season under coach Christoph Daum since the championship 1977/78 and came on at Bayern after 29 Round up to a point. This was done after a 0-2 defeat in Munich at the Stuttgarter Kickers. Cologne beat Dortmund 2-0. After that, the lead increased again. Cologne only played 2-2 in Hannover, Bayern won almost against St. Pauli. On May 20 there was a confrontation in the current sports club between thumb Heynckes and Uli Hoeness. Hoeness announced that Daum's way on May 25, was at an end. On May 25, it came to a proper final in Cologne. Until the 80th minute it was 1-1. Cologne coach Daum wanted the decision and took Jürgen Kohler from the field. Meanwhile opponent Roland Wohlfarth scored two goals in the closing stages and thus secured the championship Bavaria: two games left in the season their lead had grown to five points.

In the Relegation Table Sixteenth the Bundesliga and the third-placed Bundesliga 2 played for the last free space for the next season of the first Bundesliga.

The game of 15 Round Karlsruher SC - Borussia Mönchengladbach (3:1) was annulled by the DFB on 21 December 1988. Player Christian Hochstätter had been hit by a missile and had to be replaced. On January 19, 1989, the verdict was upheld on appeal. In addition to the replay as a stadium ban was imposed for a game against Karlsruhe. The game Karlsruhe - Hanover ( 2-0) on February 18, 1989 was therefore held in Heilbronn. The replay between Karlsruhe and Monchengladbach took place on February 22, 1989 at Karlsruhe and ended 2:2.

Top scorers

The 17 goals that reached the title " scorer ", the lowest number in the history of the Bundesliga. Only in the 1995/96 season Fredi Bobic has also been top scorer with 17 goals.
