The Formula 1 1988 season was the 39th FIA Formula 1 World Championship. She was discharged through 16 races in the period from 3 April to November 5th. Ayrton Senna won for the first time the drivers' world championship. McLaren was the fourth time Constructors' world champions.
The combination of Senna, Prost and McLaren - Honda was virtually unbeatable; 15 of the 16 races won McLaren - Honda; the race in Monza a sure win was only prevented by failure or accident, the two McLarens.

- McLaren joined TAG - Porsche to Honda and won with the MP4 / 4 15 of 16 World Championship races. Ayrton Senna was the first time world champion.
- For the first time since 1964 a World Cup was decided on the basis of the worst scores. Excluding the worst scores Alain Prost scored more than the title holder with the former record of 105 points. Senna was able to win eight Grand Prix victories, Prost seven. In addition, the Brazilian 13 times in qualifying went.
- The Constructors' Championship was won with 199 points from McLaren - Honda. All other racing teams achieved together 201 points.
