Background
Parallel to his Formula 1 commitment that had emerged relatively short time before the Grand Prix of France, Jean Alesi raced in the Formula 3000th Since he had a good chance of winning the championship in this series, he decided to opt for the rest of the season fully focus on this goal, and left his place at the Tyrrell dismissed mid-season at Benetton Johnny Herbert.
Pierre -Henri Raphanel, which only a single time a qualification was successful ( the Grand Prix of Monaco ) was replaced with Coloni by the newcomer Enrico Bertaggia. Raphanel was to have thereupon made in Rial Racing successor to the unsuccessful Volker Weidler also, who ended his Formula 1 career, then, without a qualification.
Training
The two McLaren team-mate and main rival in the fight for the world title, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, qualified for the front row ahead of Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger, and the two Williams drivers Thierry Boutsen and Riccardo Patrese. Berger's team-mate Nigel Mansell followed on the sixth place.
The two Lotus drivers Nelson Piquet and Satoru Nakajima missed the qualification, which highlighted the ever- deepening crisis of the British tradition teams.
Since it was raining during the first regular qualifying session on Friday, made all participating pilots their respective lap times on Saturday.
Race
Due to rain the start was delayed by about half an hour. The race was held in rainy conditions yet.
Senna went to Prost, Berger, Mansell, Patrese and Boutsen lead. Because of aquaplaning slipped Berger in the tenth round off. Mansell, who had overtaken the two started in front of him, Williams already during the first round, thus attaining to third place. On the podium ranks, there was then no further shifts in position. Thierry Boutsen finished the race in fourth ahead of Alessandro Nannini and Derek Warwick.
