Background

At the middle of the season was determined which team for the rest of the year were guaranteed training places and had to compete for which pre-qualification. Since no positive trends were evident at AGS, Osella, Coloni, Zakspeed and EuroBrun, these racing teams were more or less firm than teams who continue to overcome the hurdle of pre-qualification. For Brabham, BMS, onyx and Rial, however, the opportunities for advancement were good before the race at Silverstone, while Larrousse and Minardi and had to fear Ligier Lotus and in the worst case even now on with at least one of the trolleys to be among the Vorqualifikanten.

Derek Warwick returned to the Arrows team, bringing the grand prix use of Martin Donnelly initially was limited to only one race. In AGS Joachim Winkelhock was replaced by the dismissed Yannick Dalmas of Larrousse. Angle Hocks Formula 1 career thus ended after seven Grand Prix weekends without a single qualification and race participation, since he had always failed at the pre-qualification.

Training

Again, the qualification was dominated by the two McLaren drivers, with Ayrton Senna in contrast to the French Grand Prix at the weekend before scoring the pole position in front of Alain Prost. The two Ferrari drivers Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger qualified for the second row in front of Riccardo Patrese and Maurício Gugelmin.

Race

Prost came for a better start against Senna short lead. However, the Brazilian countered successfully in the first corner.

Maurício Gugelmin Nicola Larini and had to rejoin the race from the pit lane. In particular, Larini achieved by having a clear residue behind the rest of the field, the Woodcote curve in which FISA president Jean -Marie Balestre on foot crossed the line at the same moment, which was strictly forbidden. Larini was the Frenchman who otherwise always urged that all safety precautions have been adhered to, just dodge.

After a spin in the twelfth round Senna dropped out and had thereby Prost Mansell and the lead ahead of Boutsen left. Since the Belgians fell back due to a puncture, Nelson Piquet could occupy the third rank for some laps before he was ousted from that position by Alessandro Nannini nine rounds before the end of the race. Behind Nelson Piquet occupied the two Minardi drivers Pierluigi Martini and Luis Pérez- Sala, the unfamiliar places five and six. With the three championship points achieved thereby, the team was able to prevail in the struggle for guaranteed training places against Onyx.
