1989 European Competition for Women's Football qualification

The qualification for the European Football Championship Women 1989 was held in the period 10 September 1987 and 6 November 1988.

Mode

A total of 17 teams took part in the qualification. The selected teams were divided into three groups of four and one group of five teams. Within the groups, each team played twice against each other. The group winners and runners-up qualified for the first time played the quarterfinals.

Northern Ireland did not take this time, for Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia for the first time in the qualifying part.

The Scottish national team withdrew after two games. The results ( Netherlands - Scotland 4-0 Ireland - Scotland 2:1) were canceled.

Others

  • Germany and the Netherlands were the first teams during the qualification without conceding a goal.
  • After 14 consecutive wins England suffered a defeat for the first time.
