Background

Ahead of his home Grand Prix Alain Prost announced to change after the completion of the current season for Scuderia Ferrari. McLaren then took in return Gerhard Berger for the 1990 season under contract.

With immediate effect, Johnny Herbert was fired and replaced by the Benetton Formula 1 rookie Emanuele Pirro. Éric Bernard also completed his Grand Prix debut. The Frenchman replaced his compatriot Yannick Dalmas at Larrousse. Due to a new sponsorship agreement had to Michele Alboreto Tyrrell at his place in favor of the supported by the cigarette brand Camel Jean Alesi vacate, which was thus the third newcomer this weekend.
