Background

In the list of participants, there were no changes compared to the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

Training

The two McLaren team-mate Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger shared the front row ahead of Alain Prost and Alessandro Nannini. Nelson Piquet and Thierry Boutsen qualified for the starting positions five and six.
