Background
In the list of participants, there were no changes compared to the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
Training
The two McLaren team-mate Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger shared the front row ahead of Alain Prost and Alessandro Nannini. Nelson Piquet and Thierry Boutsen qualified for the starting positions five and six.
Since the track for much of the second qualification round on Saturday was damp, certain the progress on Friday, consistently shorter lap times the starting grid.
Race
In damp track conditions Berger went first through a jump start in leadership, let himself but immediately fall back a little, as he hoped thus to avoid a penalty. At the end of the first lap he was behind Senna and before Nannini on the second rank.
As the track dried out after only a few rounds, Berger sought as the first on the boxes to be mounted slicks. Senna followed him immediately, which Nannini for a short time occupied the top position before to have converted his car to dry tires in turn drove into the pits. Shortly after he had returned to the track, he collided with a groundhog and had to pit to have remove the remains from the side box of his car again.
After most of the pilots had changed to slicks, Berger was before Senna in the lead, while Prost and Boutsen dueled for third place. The Belgians could pass on lap 20 at the French came here but in a still moist place, turned and dropped by a collision with the to be lapped Nicola Larini from.
Alessandro Nannini had to park in the hairpin curve at the edge of the track his car after a spin in the 22nd round. A few laps later, Jean Alesi collided with the parked vehicle after it as before Nannini made a mistake at the same location.
Berger crossed the finish line first, but was due to his jump start a time penalty of one minute. It was thus regarded as a fourth behind Senna, Piquet and Mansell. Fifth was Alain Prost before Derek Warwick.
