The Grand Prix of Germany in 1990 took place on 29 July held at the Hockenheimring and was the ninth race of the Formula 1 season 1990.

Background

Prior to the race, there was confusion about the future of Jean Alesi. This had signed despite still existing contract with Tyrrell for the 1991 season for both Ferrari and Williams.

The engine manufacturer Subaru introduced its Formula 1 involvement after eight missed a pre-qualification. Coloni then moved to Ford Cosworth.

Training

At the halfway point of the season was determined on the basis of the results of the first half, had henceforth to attend the pre-qualification which teams. For AGS, Osella, EuroBrun, Coloni and life to any improvement in their situation arose. Larrousse, however, benefited from the downgrading of the team Ligier.

The first three rows of the grid were each formed by two teammates, from Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger (McLaren ) in front of Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell (Ferrari ) and Riccardo Patrese and Thierry Boutsen ( Williams).

Race

In the back part of the field there was a launch accident, because the clutch failed on the car by Stefano Modena. Michele Alboreto and David Brabham had abprupt swerve to not merge onto the stationary vehicle. Brabham collided with the car of Emanuele Pirro, whose rear was demolished by and through the air. It flew against the pit wall, bounced back from there and missed Philippe Alliot just barely. Pirro's car struck also into the pit wall. Alliots car had to be pushed by the marshals again. Later, the Frenchman was disqualified because of this unauthorized use of foreign aid.

Despite a better start Berger could not take the lead, before Senna. In the first six positions occurred during the first two rounds to none position changes. Then Boutsen dropped due to a gearbox problem back to tenth place. In the fifth-placed Patrese then followed the two Benetton and Alessandro Nannini Nelson Piquet. In the course of a Überholversuchs against Patrese Piquet had to drive on a run-off area in the eleventh round of their achievement behind Nannini. As a result of a driving error in the Ostkurve Mansell damaged the undercarriage of his car. He managed to still back to his box, the race had to give up on there.

Through a pit stop of the then leader Senna Nannini came in the 34th round to the top, after he had fought a duel with Patrese for this position. This also investigated shortly after the boxes on, so that Piquet was in third place behind Senna and Berger before. Due to an engine failure, he left five laps later.

Due to deteriorating tires could Nannini, who completed the race without changing tires meantime, do not hold its lead over Senna. The Brazilian overtook him in the 34th round and won. Nannini was third behind Berger, followed by Prost, Patrese and Boutsen, who in his Formula 1 career the fastest lap could chalk up the first and only time.
