Background

The field was two weeks earlier, unchanged from the Belgian Grand Prix.

Training

Ayrton Senna qualified ahead of his title rival Alain Prost and his team mate Gerhard Berger for the pole position. There was Prost's team-mate Nigel Mansell ahead of Jean Alesi and the two Williams drivers Thierry Boutsen and Riccardo Patrese and the two Benetton team -mate Alessandro Nannini and Nelson Piquet.

Race

While Senna took the lead ahead of Berger, Alesi overtook the Ferrari of Mansell before the first chicane and finished in the Curva Grande on to his team-mate Prost, he finally overtook in the braking zone of the second chicane after multiple lane changes.

As a result of a rollover from Derek Warwick in the Parabolica the race was stopped at the end of the first round. Warwick escaped unharmed and was able to participate in a replacement car on reboot.

After the race was restarted, turned out during the first round of the same sequence of actions, such as Alesi arrive after the first start, the same maneuver against the same counterparty at identical points again. In the fifth round, however, he turned a corner. Senna and Berger had been sold at that time clearly from the rest of the field. Until the 21st round but Prost was able to catch on Berger, as this was slower due to brake problems. After he had overtaken him, it came on the first four places no further changes of position.

Senna won thus before Prost, Berger and Mansell. Riccardo Patrese and Satoru Nakajima took places five and six after Thierry Boutsen due to suspension damage had to give up and both Benetton pilots had fallen as a result of unsuccessful pit stops.
