1991 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships

Mode and prehistory
In Competition mode, there was a change this year so far, was discharged as no D World Cup due to lack of interest; Therefore, the C group played again with 9 teams. In addition, it had been decided at the IIHF to increase the A group on 12 teams, making it both in the A and in the B group were not relegated this year, but four riders.
In connection with the mode change in the A group was approved by the IIHF also to elect no more European champion in the future. So after 81 years ended in the history of Hockey Championship. Last became European Champion in the USSR. It was their 27th European title.
The major political changes in Eastern Europe were felt for the first time: Because of German reunification there was no DDR team more, which for the first time after the Second World War took an all-German team at the World Ice Hockey Championships.
The course of the A-WC recalled the Ice Hockey World Championships in 1985 and 1987, again played by sovereign preliminary round, the USSR team playful in the final round of the World Championship title. ; Sweden was the fifth time title holder. Particularly disappointing this year was the performance of Czechoslovakia, which reached the worst post-war placement at the World Cup with their sixth place.
