Reports

Background

A strike of truck drivers caused the eve of the eighth world run traffic problems in France. Except for Andrea Moda Formula all Formula 1 teams were still in time to first on-site training.

Training

Since the maximum number of 30 training participants was exactly present due to lack of Andrea Moda, could be dispensed with a pre-qualification.

Érik Comas survived after colliding with Gerhard Berger subsequent violent strike to a boundary wall unharmed. In rainy weather collided in the further course of training Christian Fittipaldi and Michele Alboreto.

For the seventh time on the eighth race weekend of the year, leading by a wide margin in the World Cup standings Nigel Mansell qualified for the pole position. His team-mate Riccardo Patrese Williams followed in the second place ahead of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger, who share in their McLaren MP4/7A the second row. Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi represented the third row in front of their teammates Martin Brundle and Ivan Capelli.

Race

In damp track conditions Patrese, Mansell went on in the lead. As a result of a driving error Schumacher collided at the end of the back straight with Senna, who retired then. In midfield, several more collisions occurred. Patrese finished the first lap as the leader before Mansell, Berger, Brundle and Alesi. Mika Hakkinen followed before Thierry Boutsen, Eric Comas and Johnny Herbert.

After ten rounds Berger retired due to an engine failure. Shortly thereafter it began to rain. Until the 18th round, the weather conditions deteriorated such that the race by means of the red flag was interrupted.

After the end of a violent shudder a reboot was performed. Patrese was able to defend his position at first, but was at the end of the back straight of Mansell outdated. The Italians immediately countered successfully, let his teammates finally happen but at the end of the round according to team orders.

When it started to rain again, headed for most of the pilots who were members at that time the leading group, the boxes can be mounted to rain tires. Alesi initially tried to continue the race on slicks, in order to save the time of the pit stops. This led him in the meantime to the second place forward. However, after eight laps he had to realize that this strategy promised no lasting success and that also change his tires. A little later he was forced to retire due to an engine failure.

Mansell won ahead of Patrese, Brundle, Häkkinen, Comas and Herbert. For Williams, this was already the fifth double win of the year.
