Background

After three failed qualifications in a row Giovanna Amati was at Brabham replaced by debutant Damon Hill, as they could not raise the expected sponsorship money it took for the team desperately. Thus the Grand Prix of Austria was 1976 until today (as of end of 2013 ) last World Cup race of the Formula 1, to which with Lella Lombardi took part in a woman.

Perry McCarthy had now received a super license and was thus able to compete as a second driver alongside Roberto Moreno for Andrea Moda Formula. He graduated, however, of a fault only a few meters in the pre-qualification.

Training

For the fourth year in a row, Nigel Mansell secured the pole position. His team-mate Riccardo Patrese Williams, however, did not qualify as the three race weekends ago for the second place, but for the fourth behind Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna. Ivan Capelli shared the third row with Martin Brundle. It was followed by Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi.

All personal bests were achieved in the first qualifying session on Friday. Due to rain they could not be beaten in the second round on Saturday.

Race

The launch took place in wet track conditions, so most pilots started the race on rain tires. Due to the location of its launch site under a bridge, causing the rear wheels were on a narrow piece of dry asphalt, Jean Alesi managed a very good start, which still brought him before the first corner up to third place behind the two Williams drivers. Schumacher followed before Senna.

In the seventh round overtook Schumacher, Alesi, who dropped shortly behind Senna and Berger. After a spin, he was also overtaken by his teammate Capelli and was in round 13 on the seventh rank.

When the rain on lap 20 was stronger, Patrese turned off. Schumacher came by to second place behind Mansell, who was in the lead by a wide margin. Senna followed before Berger, Alesi and Capelli. Until the 59th round of the Frenchman came up to fourth ahead and put Senna under pressure. This turned then in the 63rd round out of play. Around the same time also fell Capelli out of the points.

Nigel Mansell managed the fourth victory in the fourth race of the season. Michael Schumacher took second place ahead of Jean Alesi, Gerhard Berger, Michele Alboreto and Pierluigi Martini.
