1996 African Cup of Nations

The African Cup of Nations 1996 (English: African Cup of Nations, French for Coupe d' Afrique des Nations ) was the 20th playout of the African continental championship in football and was held from 19 January to 3 February in South Africa. Originally the tournament was to take place in Kenya. However, Kenya was the host of the tournament back, after which the orientation of the CAF tournament in South Africa has been awarded.

As in previous years, also a qualifier for the reduction of the field with the new record number of 44 candidates this time on the first time provided for sixteen finalists took place, with host South Africa and defending champions Nigeria qualified automatically.
