The 6th IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships were held from 7th to 9th March 1997 Paris. The competitions were held at the Palais Omnisports de Paris -Bercy. It was the first international championships, where a pole vault competition for women was carried out.
There were established three world records:
- In the 4 x 400 meters relay women's Russian quartet 3:26,84 min needed.
- Wilson Kipketer achieved two world records in the 800 -meter run, min in qualifying with 1:43,96 and two days later in the final with 1:42,67 min.
