1998–99 Division 1 season (Swedish ice hockey)

The 1998/99 season was the 24th and final season of Division 1 as the second highest Swedish hockey league. Subsequently, the new third highest Swedish league from Division 1, while the HockeyAllsvenskan was introduced as a new second division.

Mode

The league was divided into the first round in four groups of eight teams. The top two teams in each group qualified for the Allsvenskan, while the other six teams had to compete in a qualifying round. For the qualifying round, the teams were given according to their main round placement between zero and five bonus points. The top two finishers of each qualifying round qualified for the playoffs. The four last placed the qualifying groups had to play in the relegation, in order to qualify for the newly established HockeyAllsvenskan.

Of the eight teams in the Allsvenskan, the top two teams qualified for the Kvalserien. The teams ranked three to six of the Allsvenskan qualified for the second playoff round. The two playoff winner and the two Allsvenskan winners met in the Kvalserien each other together with the two last placed the Elitserien to rise or relegation, the two winners were allowed to compete in the following season in the Elitserien.

For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
