1998 African Cup of Nations

The African Cup of Nations 1998 (English: African Cup of Nations, French for Coupe d' Afrique des Nations ) was the 21st playout of the African continental championship in football and was held from February 7 to 28 in Burkina Faso.

As in previous years, was also a qualifier for the reduction of the field of 36 candidates this time on the proposed sixteen finalists instead, where host Burkina Faso and defending champions South Africa qualified automatically. Angola, Algeria, Egypt, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, Cameroon, DR Congo, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, South Africa, Togo and Tunisia: In the end, the following teams qualified.

It was played with four groups of four teams. The top two teams from each group then played as usual from the quarter finals in the knockout system from the tournament winner. Host Burkina Faso reached its greatest success at the African Cup with fourth place. Egypt won the tournament, was the fourth time African champions in football and qualified for the FIFA Confederations Cup 1999 in Mexico.
