1st Air Army

The 1st Air Army of the Red Army was set up in May 1942 on the basis of the air forces of the Western Front.

The existence of the Western Front and the 3rd Belorussian Front took in 1943 in the operations of Rzhev - Sytschowka and Rzhev - Wjasma of Oryol and Smolensk operation part, 1944, the Byelorussian operation and the Baltic operation, and in 1945 at the East Prussian operation. The squadron formed by the French pilots Normandie - Niemen was incorporated into the 1st Air Army.

Commanders were:

  • Lieutenant General Timofei Kuzewalow (May-June 1942),
  • Major General Sergei Chudjakow ( July 1942 - May 1943, in March 1943 was promoted to lieutenant general),
  • Lieutenant General Mikhail Gromov (May 1943 June 1944 )
  • Colonel General Timofei Chrjukin ( July 1944 to May 1945).
