The 1st arrondissement of Paris, the Arrondissement du Louvre, one of the oldest districts of Paris. One of his four neighborhoods, the Quartier des Halles, has its origins in the early Middle Ages.

Geographical location

The 1st district is bordered to the south by the 7th and 6th, on the west by the 8th, in the north on the 2nd and on the east by the 3rd and 4th arrondissement. The first is mainly on the right bank, but also covers the western part of the Ile de la Cité. With an area of ​​183 hectares, it is the fourth-smallest arrondissement of Paris.

Demographics

According to the census of 1999 16.888 inhabitants were registered in the 1st arrondissement. This corresponds to a population density of 9228 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Politics and Administration

The town hall of the 1st arrondissement is on the Place du Louvre.

Mayor since April 2, 2001 Jean -François Legaret (* June 21, 1952 ), first vice president of the center-right liberal party UMP. Legaret was first elected on March 12, 1989 in the Paris City Council and re-elected on 11 June 1995 and on 18 March 2001.
