Dicyandiamide ( DCD short ) is a versatile used as an intermediate chemical compound from the group of Cyanamide.

Production and representation

Dicyandiamide formed during the degradation of cyanamide in the soil. Industrially it is produced from cyanamide.

Properties

Dicyandiamide is a flammable white odorless solid that is soluble in water ( 4.3% at 25 ° C). It belongs chemically to the cyanamide and guanidine derivatives.

Use

Dicyandiamide is used as synthetic building block for the production of plastics, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals. It is also used as curing agents for thermosetting epoxy resin. It is also a raw material for integrated forward intermediates for the preparation of different guanidine salts, guanamines and polycondensation for use in the fields of water treatment, textile and leather, flame retardant and paper.

Dicyandiamide was formerly used in conjunction with strong oxidizing agents as an explosive.

Biological Significance

Dicyandiamide delayed the nitrification of ammonium compounds to nitrate by Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter and is used for this reason as an inhibitor of these bacteria.
