The Hungarian Grand Prix 2000 was held on 13 August at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród and was the twelfth round of the Formula 1 season 2000.

Background

After the Grand Prix of Germany Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with two points ahead of David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen. Ferrari resulted in the Constructors' Championship with four points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes and 80 points ahead of Williams - BMW.

With Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve ( twice each ) and Mika Hakkinen (once) were three former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

In free practice on Friday Coulthard scored the fastest lap time ahead of Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher. In Saturday's training Michael Schumacher took the lead position ahead of Coulthard and his team mate Rubens Barrichello.

Qualifying

In qualifying Michael Schumacher once again achieved the fastest lap and took the pole position ahead of the two McLaren drivers Coulthard and Hakkinen.

Warm Up

Coulthard scored again in the warm up for the fastest lap. Second was Michael Schumacher before Barrichello.

Race

The launch succeeded Schumacher good, but Häkkinen was still much better off. He overtook Coulthard and sat side by side with Schumacher, cut the line and sat down with it at the first corner to the top, later there were no shifts and the field came through without incident. Only Mika Salo lost two places; the new rankings after the first round was: Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Barrichello, Heinz -Harald Frentzen and Giancarlo Fisichella, Jenson Button, Eddie Irvine and Alexander Wurz.

Hakkinen broke away from Schumacher, Coulthard did not come to the past. The rest of the field fell back on and lost a second a lap to the leaders. Ralf Schumacher drove slower than Barrichello, who had a faster car but did not pass him. It little happened until in the eighth round Fisichella spun off the track and fell back a few places. Häkkinen was now 4.1 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher, 5.8 seconds ahead of Coulthard and almost 10 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Barrichello. The race now calmed down without overtaking. Hakkinen put to fend for themselves one fastest lap after another out Michael Schumacher did not come after him and could not do anything against it. But he sat down slightly from Coulthard from, who was already 10 seconds before the duo Ralf Schumacher / Barrichello. On lap 25 Hakkinen was 11 seconds ahead of Schumacher, 17 seconds ahead of Coulthard and 30 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher, who still had Barrichello directly behind him; Three seconds behind the two followed Frentzen.

Schumacher had the car lighter than Hakkinen and came to within 10 seconds of each approach, but then put in a lap 27 pit stop. His brother Ralf and Barrichello came shortly thereafter in, while Barrichello was handled quickly and came with it to Ralf Schumacher back on track. Häkkinen increased his lead to Coulthard up to 20 seconds and put in the 31 round of his first stop a. Coulthard came in the next round, after the first stops Häkkinen was now ahead of Michael Schumacher, Coulthard, Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Frentzen, Button, Irvine, Jarno Trulli and Pedro Diniz.

Hakkinen now lost a tenth of a second or less per lap Schumacher, on which he had 13 seconds advantage. Coulthard was fastest on the road and reduced the gap to Schumacher to 4.7 seconds. Barrichello had 17 seconds behind Coulthard, but 2 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher slowly moved away from Frentzen, this ranked another 9 seconds back and was put under pressure from Button. Over the next 15 laps Coulthard reduced the gap to Schumacher becoming more and was finally in the 44th round, only 1.2 seconds behind him. The subsequent lapping Gastón Mazzacane then cost him a little time, so that Schumacher enlarged the gap to 1.9 seconds.

Coulthard reduced the distance again until on lap 48, but lost when lapping by Marc Gené once again time and was now 2.3 seconds behind Schumacher. Further back button coincided with hydraulic problems returns before Frentzen. Häkkinen was nine seconds ahead of Schumacher and 11 seconds ahead of Coulthard as the Ferrari in the 49th round came into the pits. Häkkinen was another round outside and Coulthard stopped on lap 51 and thereby won two seconds, but came anyway three tenths behind Schumacher back on track. Behind it there was no further change in position, only Trulli was now before Irvine thanks to its one -stop strategy. Schumacher and Coulthard drove on quickly and began the 10-second gap to close to Häkkinen. Behind Button had problems with his car and was overtaken by Trulli, and shortly afterwards also from behind moving Irvine. Even if the distance even further reduced, Häkkinen won ahead of Schumacher, who finished just in front of Coulthard. Barrichello was fourth, Ralf Schumacher fifth and Frentzen sixth.

In the world championship Häkkinen took over for the first time in the season date the lead. Also in the constructors' championship McLaren took over the top position, led the table but with only one point ahead of Ferrari.
