2001–02 UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League 2001 /02 was the 10th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 47th overall.

It again took part in 72 teams from 48 member associations, with the countries in the squares 1-3 UEFA five year ranking four, in the squares 4-6 three and squares 7-15 were allowed to send two teams.

The final took place on 15 May 2002 at Hampden Park in Glasgow held and was won by Real Madrid with a 2-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Mode

In the game mode, there were no changes compared to the previous season. For the first group stage were from the countries in the squares 1-3 UEFA five year ranking, Germany (including defending champion and current champions Bayern Munich ), Italy and Spain, two teams qualified and two launched in the third qualifying round. From England, France and the Netherlands (seats 4-6 ), two teams were also set for the group stage and one team competed in the third qualifying round. From Greece, Portugal, Russia and the Czech Republic (seats 7-10 ), a team in the group stage were each set and one team competed in the third qualifying round, the second Portuguese side FC Porto already went into the second qualifying round. Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey and the Ukraine (seats 11-15 ) sent one team each in the 2nd and one team in the third qualifying round.

In the first group stage á 4 teams was played in 8 groups. The respective First and Second in each group qualified for the second group stage. The third in each group were allowed to play in the UEFA Cup 2001/ 02. In the second group stage á 4 teams was played in 4 groups. Qualification

First qualifying round

The first legs took place on July 11, the return legs on 18 July 2001.

Second qualifying round

The first legs took place on 24-25. July, the second legs take place on 1 August 2001.

Third qualifying round

The first legs were held on 7 / 8 August, the return matches on 21-22. August 2001 instead.

First group stage

The 16 winners of the third qualifying round were dissolved together with the masters of the 10 highest lined up state associations and the second-placed teams from countries ranked 1-6 UEFA five year ranking as well as the defending champion in 8 groups of 4 teams each. For each group, the first- and second-placed teams came into the second group stage, while the third-placed teams continued to play in the 3rd round of the UEFA Cup in 2001/ 02.
