2002 African Women's Championship

The African Cup of Nations 2002 Women (English: African Women Championship, French: Championnat d' Afrique de football féminin ) was the 5th playout of the African Continental Championships in women's football and was held from 7 to 21 December for the second time place in 1998 in Nigeria. Venues were Oghara and Warri.

Nigeria hosts took again his home advantage and became the fifth consecutive African champions and qualified along with Ghana finalist for the World Cup of Women 2003 in the USA.

Mode

The eight teams were divided into two groups of four. Within the preliminary groups, each team plays once against each other. The group winners and the best runners-up spot to reach the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reach the finals, the semi-final losers play for third place.

Qualification

21 teams played in two knockout rounds with return game from the seven finalists. Added to this was defending champion and host Nigeria.
