2002 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship

The Volleyball World Championship for Men 2002 was held from 29 September to 13 October in Argentina instead. Brazil won for the first time the title. The Games were held in Buenos Aires, San Juan, Santa Fe, Mar del Plata, Cordoba and Salta.

Mode

The 24 participants played in the first round in six groups of four. The group winners and runners and the four best third came in the second round, which was played in four groups of four. The top two teams from each group of the second round to the quarter- finals. The losers of the quarter-finals played at positions five to eight. The winners of the quarter-finals determined the new world champion in the semifinals and final.

Qualification

Hosts Argentina qualified automatically. The other starting places were awarded in continental qualifying tournaments.

Europe

The winners and the three best runners from seven groups of four teams qualified for the World Cup finals. In Seville to host Spain and Croatia prevailed against Austria and Norway. The Dutch gave in 's- Hertogenbosch from only one sentence and qualified with Portugal against Denmark and Israel. In Ostrava Czech Republic managed to qualify with victories over Ukraine, Hungary and Slovenia. In Łódź, Poland hosts had left the French win the group, while Latvia and Moldova had no chance. In the Prešov better rate ratio against Slovakia in favor of the Bulgarians decided; Belgium and Romania managed only one victory. The German team won in Tampere only the last game against Bosnia and so finished in third place behind group winners qualified Yugoslavia and hosts Finland. North and Central America

When qualifying the NORCECA first appeared four teams in a group. Here, the Dominican Republic and the Netherlands Antilles secured the two places for the second round against Jamaica and Aruba. In Havana, Cuba, the group managed victory without dropping a set against Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Antilles. In the other group, who played in Winnipeg, Canada was group winners ahead of the U.S., which also managed to be a better second qualification, as well as the Dominican Republic and Barbabos.

South America

In South America, only three teams competed for the qualification. Brazil was in São Caetano do Sul against Venezuela and Chile is no set off. Venezuela then sat down in two playoff games over Mexico.

Asia

In Asia, the winners and the two best runners- up of three groups of four teams qualified. In Almaty occupied South Korea and Kazakhstan hosted the first places off Indonesia and Uzbekistan. In Doha, Japan won against India, Taiwan and Qatar. In Macau China and Australia were successful against Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

Africa

In Africa, Nigeria and Kenya reached in Benin City with wins against Namibia the second round. There was a quadruple and a triple, whose winner is qualified for Argentina. In Cairo, Egypt was unbeaten group winners ahead of Cameroon, Nigeria and Morocco. In Algiers, Tunisia was successful against Algeria and Kenya.
