Background
After the Japanese Grand Prix, Jenson Button led the Drivers' Championship with 14 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 16 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Brawn -Mercedes resulted in the Constructors' Championship with 35.5 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and 89 points ahead of Ferrari.
The crashed during the Grand Prix of Japan at Toyota Timo Glock was replaced by Kamui Kobayashi. This was the Grand Prix of Brazil made his Formula 1 debut.
With Giancarlo Fisichella and Kimi Raikkonen ( once each ) were two former winners of this Grand Prix.
Training
In the first free practice Mark Webber posted the fastest lap in front of Barrichello and his teammate Vettel. In the second free practice Fernando Alonso took the lead of the field. In second and third place followed Sébastien Buemi and Barrichello Lokalmatator. The third free practice session on Saturday was started after 42 minutes for 18 minutes because of rain. A few minutes before the end, it was canceled after an accident by Romain Grosjean. The fastest time on the wet track scored Williams driver Nico Rosberg ahead of his teammate Kazuki Nakajima. In third place followed button.
Qualifying
The qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix was first held under heavy rain. Already after four minutes, the first section had to be interrupted because Giancarlo Fisichella had turned in Senna -S and had to park the car. After the track was released, Rosberg achieved the fastest lap. Besides Fisichella Heidfeld, Hamilton, Kovalainen and Vettel dropped out. The second section had to be inserted before the start of a break was interrupted after a few minutes after Vitantonio Liuzzi was flown on the start - finish straight. After the rain had stopped, the qualifying session was continued for a good hour and Rosberg achieved with intermediate tires on a drying track the fastest lap. Besides Liuzzi button, Grosjean, Alguersuari and Kobayashi retired from. In the third part of qualifying Barrichello posted the fastest lap and pole position secured at his home race. In second and third place followed by Webber and Sutil. Qualifying in Brazil lasted several interruptions due to a total of 161 minutes, and was thus the longest qualifying in Formula 1 history.
Race
The Grand Prix of Brazil began with a turbulent starting phase. Barrichello claimed the lead from Webber. In third place Kimi Raikkonen had been working, who lost his front wing during a maneuver blockade of Webber. Then it came to a battle between Sutil and Trulli. Trulli came just off the track, and then collided with Sutil that it lost control of his car and Alonso shot down. After the pilots had gone out of their cars, Trulli ran to Sutil and complained to the Germans. Even during the race demanded a penalty for Sutil Trulli, as the race stewards in the collision but saw a normal racing incident, Trulli was fined for inappropriate behavior with a fine of $ 10,000.
At the end of the first round Hamilton, Kovalainen and Raikkonen had to pit. Kovalainen happened during his stop a mishap, he ripped the fuel hose from the tank system and drove to the hose on. The lighter Barrichello could not sell more than a few seconds of Webber at the top. In lap 21 Barrichello finally had to pit, handing the lead to Webber. After Kobayashi came out of the pits, there was a duel between the two Japanese, in which Nakajima lost his front wing and then crashed into a tire wall. Nakajima was uninjured. After Button had decided against Buemi overtaking itself, also graduated from Vettel for his first pit stop and came back button back on track. Meanwhile, the chances of Barrichello fell on a home win, as he had a clear gap to Webber and Kubica also lay between the two.
From the leading trio, Webber was the last of the box and asserted his leadership sovereign. Vettel was able to go by Button at his second stop, but the Briton still had the best chances of winning the World Cup. To ride as only a few rounds were, Barrichello was first overtaken by Hamilton and had to do with a puncture after a pit stop. The Brazilian was so unlucky again at his home race. In the 68th round Kobayashi once again showed his skill by he overtook Fisichella in the Senna -S.
Finally, Webber was the first of Felipe Massa, who could swing the checkered flag, checkered flag. Kubica finished second ahead of Hamilton. Additional points were awarded to Vettel, Button, Raikkonen, Buemi and Barrichello. With the fifth place in the race Button won the Drivers' World Championship in 2009.
