The Grand Prix of Great Britain 2009 was held on 21 June at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone and was the eighth race of the Formula 1 2009 season.

Background
After the Turkish Grand Prix Jenson Button led the Drivers' Championship with 26 points, ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 32 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Brawn -Mercedes resulted in the Constructors' Championship with 39.5 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and 63.5 points ahead of Toyota.
After McLaren -Mercedes KERS had expanded only drove at Silverstone the Scuderia Ferrari with the system.
The Grand Prix of Great Britain should be held in 2009 for the last time on the traditional track at Silverstone and take place at Donington in 2010. However, it was decided after the end of the season that the Grand Prix of Great Britain continues to take place at Silverstone. The sporting events during the race weekend was overshadowed by an announcement of the eight FOTA teams announced on the night of Friday its withdrawal from Formula 1.
With Barrichello, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton ( once each ) were four former winners of this Grand Prix.
Training
In the first free practice Red Bull -Renault dominated the action. Vettel set the fastest lap in front of his team-mate Mark Webber. With eight tenths of a second behind the championship leader Button finished third. In the second session the result remained unchanged at the top: Vettel drove again the fastest time ahead of Webber. Force India driver Adrian Sutil ensured third place for a little surprise. In the third free practice Williams driver Nico Rosberg once again secured a training fastest time. The German was followed by Kazuki Nakajima and Jarno Trulli.
Qualifying
In the first part of qualifying Nakajima drove the fastest lap. Lewis Hamilton, the Toro Rosso and Force India pilots resigned from. In the second section, Vettel took the lead of the field. The BMW Sauber drivers, Piquet, Kovalainen and Massa not made it into the final part of qualifying, where Vettel claimed pole position ahead of Barrichello and Webber.
Race
Vettel won the start of the race against a good starting Barrichello. In contrast to his team-mate Button started not so well and fell back to ninth place. However, he was able to improve to eighth place in the second round after a passing against Massa. The focus of the initial phase was just as Nick Heidfeld. After he had first damaged his front wing on the McLaren of Kovalainen, he was overtaken by Giancarlo Fisichella after an attack Alonso. The Spaniard he could keep behind him, however, despite several attacks. His front wing he let go until his regular pit stop on lap 22.
Meanwhile, Vettel sat further from the rest of the field and was in the tenth round in about nine seconds ahead of Barrichello. The first pit stop graduated Nakajima, who was overtaken by the Finns a lap later, after also, which was initially Kimi Raikkonen behind the Japanese. The longest the Red Bull - Renault driver could stay on the track and so Webber Barrichello overtook by a later pit stops. The leading Vettel remained of the leadership group for the longest time on the track and was thus able to retain his lead after the pit stop.
On lap 31 there was a duel of former team-mate Hamilton and Alonso. First, Hamilton overtook the Spaniard, one lap later launched a counter-attack and Hamilton overtook back before Stowe. In the duel was about the 16th Place. In the 35th round, there was a collision between Bourdais and Kovalainen. Cause of this collision was a mistake: Kovalainen held Bourdais for Webber and made him the lapping place, but recognized the Finn just before the end of the maneuver his mistake and makes. Then the two collided. Both pilots did have to give up on the box a few rounds.
At the top of the Red Bull -Renault were able to settle on the field and claim the two lead after the pit stops. Fourth place Massa sat with a later stop by to Rosberg. Behind them lay button, which in the final laps was still trying to drive past Rosberg. Finally, Vettel won the Grand Prix ahead of his teammate Webber and Barrichello. The other points were awarded to Massa, Rosberg, Button, Trulli and Raikkonen.
Button, who was able to maintain the lead in the drivers' standings sovereign, took the Grand Prix of Great Britain 2009 for the first time not attend the award ceremony. For Vettel it was the second victory of the season and the first under dry conditions. With a win, pole position and the fastest lap of the German also scored a hat trick.
With Sebastian Vettel for the seventh time in a row won another driver.
