The Italian Grand Prix 2009 took place on 13 September at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza and was the 13th race of the Formula 1 2009 season.

Background

After the Belgian Grand Prix Jenson Button led the Drivers' Championship with 16 points, ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 19 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Brawn -Mercedes resulted in the Constructors' Championship with 23.5 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and 72 points ahead of Ferrari.

At Ferrari Luca Badoer was replaced after two unsuccessful race by Giancarlo Fisichella. This was at Force India by the former reserve driver Vitantonio Liuzzi, who most recently in 2007 drove a Formula 1 race, replaced.

For the first time since the Bahrain Grand Prix put Renault back on KERS. Along with McLaren and Ferrari were six cars with this system to the start.

With Barrichello (twice), Fernando Alonso and Vettel ( once each ) were three former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

The fastest lap in the first practice session scored McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton ahead of his teammate Heikki Kovalainen and Adrian Sutil. In the second free practice Force India driver Sutil took the lead of the field. The second and third occupied the Renault driver Romain Grosjean and Fernando Alonso. Qualifying

In the first phase of qualifying Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen posted the fastest lap ahead of Hamilton and Button. The Toro Rosso and Williams drivers Timo Glock and dropped out. Race

At the end of the race attended the Toyota pilots who were outside the top ten for internal duels, which eventually Glock was able to prevail. On the last lap, Hamilton flew from between the Lesmo curves and triggered a safety car phase. Thus Barrichello had his car only drive to the finish and won the race ahead of his team-mate Button.
