2009 Tour Down Under

The 11th Tour Down Under was held from 20 to 25 January 2009. The bicycle race was held in six stages over a distance of 802 kilometers. It was the first race of the UCI ProTour 2009.

On 18 January 2009, the tour opened with the criterion Cancer Council Classic. It does not belong to the UCI ProTour.

Participants

As in 2008, took all 18 ProTeam and the team UniS -Australia ( Australia's selection ) part.

The seven -time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong ( Astana ) won his first professional cycling race since 2005. For a derogation of the UCI was necessary because, according to anti-doping rules Armstrong had returned too late.

In addition to the Columbia riders André Greipel and Michael Rogers were three other former overall winner at the start: Stuart O'Grady (1999 and 2001), Luis León Sánchez Gil (2005 ) and Martin Elmiger (2007).

The last year's runner Allan Davis ( Quick Step) is the only driver who has participated in all ten preceding editions of the Tour Down Under. In addition to the prior year third parties José Joaquín Rojas ( Caisse d' Epargne ) many other sprinters were at the start, so the earlier stage winner Robbie McEwen, Baden Cooke and Graeme Brown.

Stage 1: Norwood Mawson Lakes

After 10 kilometers, formed Olivier Kaisen ( Silence- Lotto) and Andoni Lafuente ( Euskaltel -Euskadi ) is a leaving group. This led to 20 kilometers to the field. The two drivers shared the standings. Kaisen won the first intermediate sprint and Lafuente the mountains classification.

The Columbia team, Rabobank and Liquigas headed the field for the last few kilometers. André Greipel (Columbia ), attracted by his teammates Mark Renshaw and Gregory Henderson, suggested in a mass sprint Australians Baden Cooke and Stuart O'Grady.

Stage 2: Hahndorf, Stirling

Stage 3: Unley, Victor Harbor

After around 13 kilometers André Greipel was involved in a heavy crash of eight riders. He was taken to a hospital with a dislocated shoulder.

Stage 4: Burnside Village Angaston

Stage 5: Snapper Point to Willunga

Stage 6: Adelaide City Council Circuit
