Background
After the Grand Prix of Great Britain Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' championship with 80 points ahead of Mark Webber and 92 points ahead of Fernando Alonso. Red Bull -Renault resulted in the constructors' championship with 110 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 164 points ahead of Ferrari.
The previously introduced a race between gas prohibition was abolished from this race and the rules in force at the Grand Prix of Europe, came back into power.
At the Grand Prix of Germany presented Pirelli riders the tire compounds medium ( white) and soft (yellow), as well as for wet conditions Intermediates (light blue ) and Full - Wets (orange ) are available. On Friday, the teams received for testing purposes also a new variant of the tire type soft. It was also decided at this race weekend a rule change, after get the driver for Friday an extra set of Intermediates, so they do not need to save their tires under wet conditions.
Karun Chandhok returned this weekend as a race driver in Formula 1 and put forward Jarno Trulli at Lotus -Renault for a Grand Prix.

Training
In the first free practice Alonso posted the fastest lap ahead of Webber and Vettel. In this training Nico Hülkenberg the Force India of Paul di Resta and Narain Karthikeyan took the HRT Vitantonio Liuzzi of. In the second free practice Webber was the quickest driver in front of Alonso and Vettel. In the third free practice Vettel set the fastest time ahead of Webber and Alonso.
Qualifying
In the first phase of qualifying Massa scored the fastest lap. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots and Kamui Kobayashi retired from. In the second qualifying segment, Hamilton took the lead of the field. The Toro Rosso and Williams driver Sergio Pérez and, di Resta and Nick Heidfeld retired from. After the technical review of the racing cars, it was found that the fuel in the vehicle of Sébastien Buemi was non-compliant. Buemi was then taken out from the valuation and had to start from the end of the field. The teams have to submit before the season a gasoline sample, which is reviewed shortly in the course of the season.
Race
Hamilton won the race ahead of Alonso and Webber. The race took place consistently in dry weather.
The first three pilots changed during the race more often their positions and were mostly within striking distance of their opponents. Behind them formed a larger gap and there were only three other pilots within the lead lap to the finish.
Vettel finished the race for the first time in the season not on the first two positions and came in fourth place finish.
