Background
Iowa Corn Indy 250 After Will Power led in the drivers' standings with 3 points ahead of Ryan Hunter -Reay and 15 points ahead of Scott Dixon. At the engine manufacturers Chevrolet led with 9 points ahead of Honda and with 36 points, ahead of Lotus.
At this Indy the so-called push-to- pass button was reintroduced. It was used from this race at all non- oval racing. The boost pressure of the turbo engines is from this race 1.5 bar. With the push-to- pass button allows pilots to 0.1 increase the boost pressure of the turbo engines bar for a short period.
Lotus took off this weekend with a new engine one. IndyCar allowed before any manufacturers that at least 2.5 percent was the middle or end of the season behind the competition to rework their engine and make new homologation. Lotus modified his engine to this race and the race at Sonoma and Baltimore. Simona de Silvestro completed for this reason before that race testing in Lexington.
Sébastien Bourdais took over as planned the Dragon cockpit of Katherine Legge.
With Dario Franchitti (three times ), power ( twice), Bourdais, Justin Wilson and Hunter -Reay (once each ) were five former winners of this Indy.
Training
In the first session there were two breaks in and the training session was extended by 15 minutes. After Josef Newgarden had remained with fuel pressure problems, the training was stopped, and all the pilots drove into the pits. Here, Wilson remained stuck in first gear and hit the rear area of the vehicle Bourdais. There are four mechanics were ( three of Dragon Racing, Dale Coyne Racing from a ) who worked on the car, injured and hospitalized. No person is attracted to serious injuries. All mechanics were discharged from the hospital within a day. The training was interrupted for about 25 minutes. At the end of the training session Wilson dodged in curve 8 the rotating Alex Tagliani and crashed into the tire wall, which led to a further interruption. Franchitti was the fastest pilot in front of his teammate Dixon and Simon Pagenaud.
In the second session Franchitti kept the lead. Pagenaud was second and Dixon third. Graham Rahal, Ed Carpenter and Wilson each solved with an accident in Turn 8 from red phases. In contrast to the first two training sessions, which took place under dry conditions on Friday, the track was wet on Saturday morning at the beginning of the third workout. After the first half of the track was dried to the extent that slicks were used. The training was interrupted temporarily by slips of Newgarden in curve 11 and Hunter-Reay in turn 8. Dixon scored the fastest lap in front of Hunter-Reay and Pagenaud.
Qualifying
The first part of the session was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came to the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first Qualifyingabschnitts, where the drivers of the first group, the odd positions from 13, and the drivers of the second group were assigned to the even positions from 14. In the first group Pagenaud drove the fastest lap in the second group Franchitti was the fastest pilot.
In the second segment of qualifying, the six fastest riders qualified for the final section. Wilson scored the fastest lap. In the last section, called the Firestone Fast Six, located Franchitti secured the 29th pole position of his career ahead of Power, Wilson, Bourdais, Tagliani and Dixon. 1997 Franchitti had at that time, brought on this track in the CART series his first pole position in the highest class of the American formula racing.
Due to premature motor changes Tagliani, James Hinchcliffe, James Jakes and Simona de Silvestro were displaced by ten positions to the rear.
Final training
In the final training session on Sunday morning there was a break after de Silvestro was with a tire that had broken away from the boundary, collides. Dixon was the fastest driver in front Pagenaud and Mike Conway.
Race
At the start of the Honda Indy Toronto Franchitti claimed the lead. Power lost the second place at Wilson. But he succeeded at first and in the sixth round to overtake Wilson also Franchitti and to take the lead. Shortly after Dixon dropped out with an engine failure and de Silvestro gave up on the box. Power led at this stage before Franchitti, Wilson, Bourdais, Hunter -Reay, and Conway Pagenaud.
From the 13th round of pit stops began. Here, Tony Kanaan hit a tire of Oriol Servia and received a drive-through penalty after he was no longer in the top 20. After it had almost come in a duel for eighth place between Charlie Kimball and Rahal to a collision and lost by an evasive maneuver many positions, Rahal drove in the first corner in the wall and triggered the first caution period of the race from.
As the leading pilots had not been at this time in the pits, they fell on their stop back into midfield. Pagenaud took over the lead ahead of Hunter -Reay, Kanaan, Wilson and Briscoe. Shortly after the yellow phase Hinchcliffe gave up with an engine problem in the pits. Pagenaud was in the middle third of the race on the pace and came in the 49th round of his second pit stop. He had previously able to drive 35 laps on one tank, so it was unclear whether he could do without another stop until the end of the race. Hunter -Reay then took the lead of the race.
In the phase of the second stop Power collided with Newgarden. Power went on to Newgarden and thereby destroyed the front wing and suffered a flat tire front left. In order to keep power were on the lead lap, initially only changed his tires. However, this did not succeed, and power came a second time, this time to repair his car's front and to the box. In addition to power was also Franchitti, whose first stop did not go well, dropped out of the lead lap out. In the 67th round eventually also gave Wilson on with engine problems in the pits.
Hunter -Reay is now leading the race and built its lead, while Canaan and Pagenaud lying behind fuel savings, thus slowly drove and stayed the other drivers. In the 72nd round Kimball passed, which was in fourth place and had to save no fuel in the third curve both Pagenaud, and Canaan, and took second place. Fifth place took almost the same time Newgarden of Briscoe. Canaan eventually lost more places and fell in the meantime back to the elf place.
In the 79th round Newgarden Pagenaud attacked in the third corner. It failed his maneuver, and he stopped in front of the stacks of tires in this curve. This incident triggered a more yellow phase. In this Pagenaud completed a short Splash -and- Dash -stop in order to have enough fuel for the final laps. Pagenaud was also subject to a penalty for blocking.
At the restart it came to chaotic conditions. In curve 1 Conway and Bourdais attempted an overtaking maneuver against Kimball. Here, Bourdais had a contact who was a part -timer the next caution period. In this section also Rubens Barrichello spun in front of the vehicle from Tagliani. The second trigger for the next caution period was a collision between Briscoe and Franchitti in curve 3 Briscoe dodged a vehicle and transported Franchitti into the wall. Mitverwickelt In this incident were Pagenaud, Marco Andretti and Carpenter. The track was blocked temporarily at this point.
The race was ended under yellow flags. Hunter -Reay won his third race in a row. He thus became the first American since AJ Allmendinger in the Champ Car season 2006, to have managed this. Also Allmendinger scored their third win in Toronto. Kimball was second with a flawless race and achieved its hitherto best IndyCar placement at all. Conway was in third place for the first time on the podium. Canaan finally came still in fourth place finish in front of Servia. The top 10 was completed by Hélio Castroneves, JR Hildebrand, Jakes, Takuma Satō and Tagliani. Jakes scored with an eighth place also the hitherto best IndyCar result of his career. In addition, Jake's most places made in the race with 16 positions well.
In the drivers' standings Hunter -Reay took the lead with a lead of 34 points on Power. Hunter -Reay is by Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006, the first American who led the IndyCar Series. Castroneves took the third place. Among the manufacturers of the positions remained unchanged.
After the race too large a tank was found in the vehicle of Conway. AJ Foyt Enterprises was punished with a fine of $ 15,000 and the team have 10 points deducted. Conway was not affected by the penalty.
