After 14.5 kilometers began in Feissons -sur -Isère (414 m ), the first increase in the Hors Category Col de la Madeleine (1993 m). After 70 kilometers before climbing the Col de la Croix de Fer ( 2067 m) in Saint- Étienne -de- Cuines (472 m) decreased the intermediate sprint. In the descent of the Col de la Croix de Fer had to be climbed as ascent of the Col du Mollard (1638 m, 2nd category ). Then the descent to Saint -Jean -de- Maurienne (604 m) was down continued. There the route rose in La Toussuire to mountain top finish.

Race course

Shortly after the start formed two breakaway groups, who together formed after about five kilometers to a comprehensive 31 group of drivers. The residue of the field at the start of the climb to the Col de la Madeleine was about a minute; while some drivers from the leading group fell back, others joined up at her. To finally 28- man lead group included, among others, Pierre Rolland, Michele Scarponi, Ivan Basso, Alejandro Valverde, Vasil Kiryjenka, Fredrik Kessiakoff, Chris Anker Sørensen, Alexander Vinokourov, Levi Leipheimer and Peter Velits. The first mountain stage of the Hors Category decided Velits before Kessiakoff for themselves. The field with the total first followed with 2:55 residue.

Velits and Kessiakoff who had sprinted to the mountain classification, resulted in the departure of around 50 seconds ahead of the other outliers. In the subsequent flat piece in the valley Rolland, Scarponi, Valverde, Yuri Trofimov and Robert Kišerlovski caught up with them. The intermediate sprint won Kessiakoff before Velits. At the start of the climb to the Col de la Croix de Fer was formed at the tip of a group of 15 riders. On the climb some riders fell back out of this group, which had a lead of 4:15 minutes on the peloton also decreasing. From this Cadel Evans tried to pluck, but he did not decisively away because the Sky team led by Bradley Wiggins took care of a consistently high pace. Five kilometers before the pass Evans was caught again. The pass crossed Kessiakoff first, followed by Rolland.

The climb to the Col du Mollard is a three - lead group was formed consisting of Rolland, Kišerlovski and Kiryjenka. Rolland was also the first crossed the pass. A few kilometers later took Sørensen, the lead group again. About twelve kilometers from the finish Rolland attacked, leaving his companions behind him, and he was able to continue to expand its lead. At the beginning of the final ascent, the group was to the overall leader Wiggins back about three minutes. From this group, Vincenzo Nibali tried to pluck out twice in vain. A pace of tightening Wiggins and his team-mate Chris Froome meant that Evans lost the connection and fell back.

Another attack of Froome four and a half kilometers from the finish meant that Wiggins briefly could not keep up, then Froome reduced his pace to leave to catch the team captain again. Nevertheless, this group was the other remaining outliers gradually catch up - except for Rolland, who secured the solo stage victory. While the group around Wiggins crossed the finish line 55 seconds behind Evans lost 2:23 minutes on the winner. In the overall standings Froome and Nibali moved at the expense Evans by one place forward. Fredrik Kessiakoff, the residue crossed the finish line with over 13 minutes, the guide brought back in the Mountains classification, which he to Thomas Voeckler had temporarily have to give.
