Background

After the Milwaukee IndyFest Hélio Castroneves led the Drivers' Championship with 16 points on Ryan Hunter -Reay and Marco Andretti on 50 points.

Oriol Servia, Ryan Briscoe broke amortized as a pilot of the vehicle with the number 4 of Panther Racing. Briscoe took part in this weekend 's 24-hour race at Le Mans and was therefore prevented. Servia had last been in the penultimate race for Panther Racing in use.

With Dario Franchitti (twice), Tony Kanaan, Andretti and Hunter -Reay ( once each ) were four former winners in this Indy.

Training

In the training of Canaan was the fastest driver of Andretti and Will Power.

Qualifying

The qualifying format for the Iowa Corn Indy 250 did not correspond to the classical time training on oval courses. First, an individual time trial took place over one lap. Then were played over 50 rounds of three so-called heat races. The top six drivers of the time trial qualified for the third heat race. The remaining 18 pilots were spread over the first two Heat Races. The two best drivers in the first two Heat Races qualified for the third heat. In the third heat race, the first ten positions have been assigned, the third - to nine -placed driver of the first two Heat Races were then alternately classified: The driver of the first heat races were the straight, the driver of the second heat races the odd positions. The first twelve drivers were given bonus points for qualifying.

In the ITT Castroneves was the fastest. Next to him, Andretti, Power, Kanaan, James Hinchcliffe and Servia qualified for the final runoff. The first seven drivers used a Chevrolet engine. Scott Dixon was eighth best Honda Pilot. Up to Ana Beatriz, all participants sat for a time.

In the first Heat Race Dixon scored a start - to-finish victory before Takuma Satō and Alex Tagliani. All drivers remained on the lead lap. It was the fastest of the three heat races.

The second Heat Race Ed Carpenter led the first 46 laps. In the 47th round, he was overtaken by Graham Rahal, who had gone from seventh place in the race. Shortly thereafter crashed Rahals teammate James Jakes. The race was ended under yellow flags. Rahal won ahead of Carpenter and Simon Pagenaud. Simona de Silvestro had handling problems and came up with three laps to the finish. The first seven riders stayed on the lead lap.

In the third heat race Castroneves managed a start- to-finish victory. He sat down and came up with declining gradually over three seconds ahead of Power to the finish. Hinchcliffe was third. The first eight pilots remained on the lead lap.

Castroneves was awarded as the best qualification, the bonus points for pole position and was seen in the IndyCar statistics Pole sitter. Since he had changed his engine prematurely, he was transferred to ten positions back so Power received the first starting position. Besides Castroneves Dixon, Satō, Josef Newgarden, Beatriz and Jake were set back because of premature engine change at ten positions.

Race

Power and Hinchcliffe dueled in the first round. Hinchcliffe came out on top and took the lead. There were two driving lines in the initial phase. Castroneves and Hunter -Reay worked their way from places eleven and twelve starting soon in the top 10 before.

After Hunter -Reay had his front wing was damaged in a duel with Rahal, were debris on the track. This triggered a caution period. This lists all the drivers completed their first pit stop and Hunter -Reay let himself change his front wing. As he fueled only one lap later, he lost some positions and fell to the back of the field on the 21th Place. Hinchcliffe kept the lead and defended this also when restarting. Hinchcliffe was leading the race ahead of Rahal and Andretti, while Franchitti was little lapped for the second time later. Franchitti had major problems with the car set-up. Shortly thereafter, also Power, who had similar problems, lapped.

In the 138th round it came to the second caution period after Tagliani had had an accident in the second corner and it damaged his vehicle. In this yellow phase, there was little activity in the pits. Hinchcliffe was on the line, claiming the lead at the restart. A little later triggered debris from the third and final caution period. After this restart Hinchcliffe fell for a round behind Rahal, but took the lead thereafter. The two drove several laps side by side until Hinchcliffe had finally prevailed. Rahal had a little later when lapping onto the grass short and lost second place to Hunter -Reay. In this phase of the race Satō and Beatriz dropped out with technical problems.

In the 190th round of the phase of the final pit stops under green flags began. Hinchliffe took the 195 to the box. There were difficulties moving the left front wheel. He fell through the stop behind Carpenter, Canaan, and Wilson, who pursued a different strategy back, but stopped in front of Hunter -Reay and Rahal. After Carpenters stop Wilson led again for a short time at the race. After all the stops Hinchcliffe was back in the lead.

Hunter -Reay unlocked on Hinchcliffe, but by regular curves he had no chance to try an attack on his teammates. Behind it was, however, changes in position and Canaan, and Carpenter walked past Rahal. A few seconds before the end of the race, Dixon gave up residue on the box with two rounds. He had as his teammate Franchitti and Power handling large problems. The two had three or four laps down. De Silvestro also had major handling problems and was overtaken seven times.

Hinchcliffe finally scored his third win of the season and won for the first time on an oval track. Hinchcliffe had dominated the race and led 226 of 250. He had completed more laps led in this race, as in all previous IndyCar race. Hunter -Reay followed before Canaan and Carpenter. Rahal was fifth best Honda Pilot. Pagenaud, who scored the sixth place, the only other Honda riders in the top -10 in addition was. This Chevrolet had eight riders in the top ten. The top 10 were completed by Servia, Castroneves, Andretti and EJ Viso. The first ten drivers were the only ones who were on the lead lap to the finish.
