2014 FIFA World Cup qualification

The qualification (or first round ) for the football World Cup in 2014 was carried out from 2011 to 2013. A total of 202 organizations played 31 finals places. The qualifying draw took place on 30 July 2011 in Rio de Janeiro. The Asian Association already resolved on 30 March 2011 from the first two qualifying rounds.

Guam, Bhutan (both AFC ) and Mauritania (CAF ) refrained from participation. Brunei ( AFC) was suspended from 2009 to May 30, 2011 by FIFA and therefore could not participate in World Cup qualifying, Mauritius (CAF ) was indeed drawn, retired but prior to the first qualifying match.

The starting positions for the final round were awarded as follows:

  • UEFA (Europe): 13 grid positions for 53 qualifying participants
  • CONMEBOL (South America ): 4 or 5 grid positions for 9 qualifying participants plus a starting place for the hosts Brazil
  • CAF (Africa ): 5 grid positions for 51 qualifying participants (after withdrawal of Mauritius)
  • AFC (Asia ): 4 or 5 starting positions for 43 qualifying participants
  • CONCACAF ( North and Central America and the Caribbean): 3 or 4 starting positions for 35 qualifying participants
  • OFC ( Oceania ): 0 or 1 launch site for 11 qualifying participants

Two of the participants were determined in the intercontinental play-offs between an Asia representative and a representative of South America as well as between representatives from Oceania and CONCACAF.

Rules

According to FIFA regulations the preliminaries in the form of group matches and cup matches may be played in each round-trip games or in exceptional cases a tournament in one of the countries involved. In the group matches, three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. It decided the following criteria:

Cut two teams according to these criteria the same as, a play can be set.

In the cup matches counts Torgleichheit after the two games, the higher number of away goals scored. If the number of away goals equal, extra time is played. If no goal in extra time, the match will be decided on penalties. Traps in extension on both sides same number of goals, the away team qualified by more away goals scored.

All 11 full members of the Association of oceanic OFC played at the World Cup. The first two rounds of qualifying were also part of the football Ozeanienmeisterschaft 2012 On qualifying tournament in Samoa the four weakest teams of Oceania participated.:

After two group stages, the national team of New Zealand prevailed as the winner in the oceanic Football Association.

Intercontinental play-offs

In the intercontinental play-offs the following confederations or sides met:

The games were held on 13 and 20 November 2013. Were victorious in each of the representatives of the calculation according to the FIFA World Ranking stronger classified confederations, with Uruguay in the first leg of their biggest away victory was achieved in an intercontinental playoff game. Mexico scored in the two playoff games more goals than in 10 games the 4th round of CONCACAF qualifying.
