(2060) Chiron

The asteroid ( 2060 ) Chiron was born on October 18, 1977 discovered by Charles Kowal at the Mount Palomar and named after Cheiron.

Chiron was the first observed object, which belongs to the so-called centaurs, which are on unstable orbits between the outer planets. He probably comes from the Kuiper belt.

Chiron's diameter is 200 km appreciated. In about six hours it rotates about its own axis.

1991, a gaseous envelope ( coma) was discovered by Chiron, which he is now classified not only as a planetoid, but also as ( the largest known ) comet. In addition to its designation as an asteroid the object therefore also carries a designation as a periodic comet ( 95P/Chiron ).
