August 23 ( spoken Douazeci şi trei august [ douəzet͡ʃ ʃi trei august ]; outdated Tatlageac ) is a municipality in the district of Constanta in Dobrogea region of Romania.

Geographical location

The municipality is located in the Dobruja 23 August Highlands ( Podişul Dobrogei ) - part of the Romanian Dobrudja ( Dobrogea ) - and on the east by the Black Sea. The place is located on the European road 87 about halfway between the cities of Eforie in the north and in the south of Mangalia; the county seat, Constanţa is located approximately 30 kilometers north of 23 August away.

History

A settlement of the region is according to archaeological finds around the lake Tatlageac - removed about one kilometer south of August 23 -, dating back to Roman times.

The present town 23 August it was known at the time of the Turkish Empire under the name Tatlageacul Mare. 1929 was the place Domnita Elena; after 1944 following the day of the Royal coup d'état in Romania on 23 August 1944 named. From 1994-1996 tried the name of the place was to change again in Tatlageacul Mare, which was rejected by the majority of the indigenous population.

Demography

As of the 2002 census, 5279 people were registered in the municipality 23 August. 4699 of these were Romanians, 509 Tartars, 44 Roma, 14 Turks, Magyars seven, two of whom were Ukrainians and Lipovans; each one known to be a Serb and Bulgarian. Attractions
